it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember the challenge of reading "Romeo and Juliet" the first time? My students, many with language barriers, have not had access to the modern day translation of a Shakespeare work that would provide them with the ability to create connections with "Twelfth Night".
Houston, Texas is one of the most diverse cities in the entire country--not just racially, but socioeconomically.
Students at my school range from every walk of life. They are students at a disadvantage in their education, but not in their goals and dreams. They strive daily to learn about everything they know. They want to become the next doctors, chemists, writers, police officers, military officials, etc, but they are just at a disadvantage, all because of their background.
My Project
A majority of my students have not had the opportunity to really create a strong connection with a piece of literature before. Through these donations, students will be able to find a Shakespearean play (of all things!) to be modern, relevant, and relatable. They will be able to apply this knowledge and see the modern-day application of Shakespeare to the real world.
Students are required by Texas curriculum, to read a Shakespearean play in Sophomore English.
The suggested text is "Julius Caesar", however, as an English team, we decided that "Twelfth Night" is a much more relatable and understandable piece of literature. Providing them this modern-day translation will be immeasurable in getting the students to not only comprehend, but analyze and apply to their own writings and life.
