My students need some new novels to read. We are especially in need of high-interest subjects for the reluctant readers in the class.

My Students

Who was the first literary character that you really identified with? Many of my students are still searching for that character. I want to help them find a character that they can identify with.

My students are a very diverse group from a highly dense, urban setting.

The majority are from very low socio-economic backgrounds and lack many of the advantages of the surrounding counties. Despite those challenges, there is a great atmosphere in the school.

My Project

I have requested several sets of books with 5 copies of each in order to use them in small group settings. We will be able to hold small group literature circles and students will have a better chance of discussing the books with their own peer groups.

Many of my students do not make connections with the stories they read because they are not engaged with the characters.

They see them as too different, and they fail to relate. I am searching for books that will help them get over this hurdle that could possibly create lifelong lovers of reading.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
