Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Wouldn't it be great if all students had access to a classroom full of appropriate resources for their education, even students with more severe disabilities? I believe my students also deserve classroom materials that meet their needs and enhance their educational experience.

I teach a special education class of 6 students from Kindergarten to 4th grade with moderate to severe developmental disabilities.

We are in a public school in one of the poorest sections of this district. My students' disabilities (Autism, Down syndrome, Vision, and Rett syndrome) have caused developmental delays compared to same age peers. They have challenges in communication, mobility, fine motor skills, vision, and cognition. Despite these challenges they are able to make progress in self help and pre-academic skills, are learning to communicate in alternative ways (PECS, voice output devices), and continue to be happy, loving (and lovable) children.

My Project

I am seeking donations for important items to create a sensory environment. This includes items to address tactile, visual, and auditory needs. The first item is insta-snow, and it's great for tactile sensory needs. It is a powder that mixes with water and then looks, and amazingly feels, like snow. The lumindisk lights up in response to sound (looks like a mad scientist's tool). It is ideal for teaching students to project their voice while showing volume visually. The final item is the water panel, a VERY calming tool that has flowing water for auditory sensory needs and changes color for visual. I am asking you to help enhance the educational experience for these disabled students. The items are not very "academic" in nature, but they're appropriate learning tools for these students. School districts often supply resources for non-disabled students (or less severely disabled) and my students get lost in the shuffle. Please help bring these exciting sensory tools to our classroom.

My students need these sensory items, like the beautiful and soothing water panel and the amazing insta-snow, to enhance their education by providing a stimulating sensory environment.

These tools, used throughout the day, will help the maintain a higher level of engagement in classroom activities, avoid rising stress and anxiety levels, and truly enjoy their school experience. That is why I ask for your assistance.
