Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

One of my student's favorite projects is one where they sew and design a Mexican wrestler, or Luchador based on a personal characteristic. But this project is in danger of not being brought to life because of lack of sewing supplies!

My wonderful students are first year design students who base all of their projects on their identities.

They attend a small, very open minded high school where all types of people are accepted for who they are. Even with the budget cuts our students have kept their chins up and still have produced fine art projects with the little supplies they have. With better materials I only see them impressing us even further.

My Project

With the requested sewing needles, felt fabric and thread my students will be able to learn basic sewing techniques which will come in handy for many years here at school and outside of school. The new scissors will allow my students to easily cut fabric and put together their Mexican wrestling masks with ease. In addition the students will be able to add those tiny details that help bring a piece together easily with the requested fabric glue. In addition to learning basic sewing skills, students will learn package design and take an illustrated concept and form a 3 dimensional product.

This project is important to fund because it contains so many great lessons.

Within this unit students will learn logo and costume design, how to sew, the connection between color and the human emotion and line and shape. They will build a strong personal link between themselves and their project since it is based on one of their personal characteristics.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
