Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

“The more you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you’ll go.” This is a quote from one of my students’ favorite authors, Dr. Seuss. Reading will be the key to unlocking all possibilities for my students and this quote cannot embody this sentiment any better.

I teach kindergarten at a K-8 public school in California.

The school is currently a title one school. My students in my classroom come from very diverse backgrounds such as Latino-American, African-American, and Pacific Islander. Only 25% of my students had previous schooling before they entered kindergarten. Seventy-five percent of my students are English Language Learners, in which they primarily speak Spanish or Tongan in their household. The majority of my students receive free and reduced lunch.

My Project

My students are genuinely excited to read! They are always excited to begin our language arts and center time. My students are engaged in centers where they’re given the choice to build on their literacy skills. My school has very limited resources when it involves kindergarten literacy center activities. Most of our literacy centers are teacher generated in order to provide students with a strong literacy foundation. The LeapFrog Tag Readers will be the start to helping my students become successful in reading. They will spark their interest and guide them through the reading fundamentals. My students are beginning to read and are truly interested in books. The readers will allow my students to listen to stories while teaching them concepts about print, reading comprehension, vocabulary, and phonic skills. It is the perfect way to engage technology in our kindergarten classroom!

The LeapFrog Tag Readers will affect the lives of many students.

They are resources that will be used for years to come in order to inspire young readers. Reading is key and will allow my students to succeed in many ways over the years. My students have many hardships in our community to begin with and the ability to learn should not be one of those things. The LeapFrog Tag Readers are vital for building a solid academic foundation.
