Bullies Don't Belong in School

My students need the book Bullying in Schools and a laptop to survey/graph other students' responses to bullying and create a website to combat it on campus.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Bullies don't belong in school! I want all students to realize that bullying can happen anywhere, causing lasting harm. Aside from heightening awareness, my class will offer strategies to fight bullying by creating versions of fairy tales (accessible online) that incorporate an anti-bullying lesson.

My students are intelligent, sensitive, and caring second graders in a Title 1 gifted/high-ability magnet.

All throughout the year we have been talking about how we need to respect each other because students can't learn if they aren't treated kindly. Thus I rarely hear about students being mean to each other; and if problems arise, we quickly resolve them because they know we need to keep making our classroom "a great place to learn." They have reported incidents of other students they don't know saying mean things to them on the yard, but it is hard to pinpoint the "culprits" since they don't know their names. I would like to use technology to start a school-wide anti-bullying campaign that will be available for everyone to access via the school website. However, our school has limited resources for equipping classrooms with the latest technological tools. In fact, we rely heavily on the parent booster club to fund such resources.

My Project

The power of a good story to reach children's hearts and minds cannot be underestimated. We are currently reading different fairy tales and have learned to make a simple slideshow using text, clipart, and various effects. What if my students used their storytelling and technology skills to create a caring culture throughout the whole school? What if hearing these stories read by the children who wrote them helps a bully realize how he could change, or at least give other children the tools to stand up to the bully? My students could go from classroom to classroom with their mini-laptop to conduct a confidential survey (in a private booth) to see how many students have been bullied that week, and post results to show if the number has gone down since starting the campaign. They will also present their slideshow of a fairy tale that they've changed to include an anti-bullying lesson. They will learn the power of words/images, and realize that they can change the world for the better.

All schools should take an active stance against bullying.

How powerful can it be if young children express how bullying affects them and help other children not become bullying victims? I believe such a campaign by students will have a lasting impact on the school environment. With your help, we can make my school a place where no one comes to school afraid and everyone can experience the joy of learning.
