This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine that the language you grew up with felt like a foreign language. That's often how my students feel. Words alone, whether spoken or written, do not seem to be enough to inspire learning in my students. They often need images bring words to life.

I am a special education teacher for students in Kindergarten through Fifth Grade at an urban public school in California.

My students face a variety of challenges each day, including autism, ADHD and other learning disabilities. They are also energetic, hard-working, and creative. That's why it's so disheartening when they struggle to follow directions; meet behavioral expectations; read and understand grade level material; and express their ideas in writing.

My Project

A color printer would enhance learning for all of my students by giving us the opportunity to create visual schedules and photo-labels, personalized positive behavior charts, and reading and writing supports in a matter of minutes. Also, a laminator would ensure that student materials stand up to everyday use so that they can be enjoyed over and over again.

In my experience, a picture is worth a thousand words in a classroom setting.

Images can personalize a student's learning in a way that nothing else can. Suddenly, the child who can't yet read his own name can find everything he needs, because his picture has been placed on all of his supplies. It seems like a small thing, but really it's the beginning of everything. Once a child feels that you speak the same language, anything is possible.
