This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Getting a sixth grader to read quality books other than gossip magazines or a comic book is like going to the dentist! They moan, whine and give you any excuse they can to avoid reading a book. This is what I am encountering in my class.

I teach at a Title I school, where they all qualify for the free lunch program.

I teach Language Arts and History to about 50, sixth graders. Although my kids are bright, I do have some that are below grade level in reading and comprehension. Whenever they are asked to read it is torture, just like going to the dentist. When we have reading time, my students don't get a book instead they start to draw or do nothing. I just can't seem to motivate them to get a book. Yet when we have to do research or need computers they literally fight to see who can go first.

My Project

My goal is to get enough Kindle Fires to be able to make a small center for those who are having difficulty reading and comprehending as well as to inspire the other ones to read a book! Having three Kindle Fires would complete my goal of making a center for those who need it the most. My students automatically light up when they have technology at their fingertips, what better way to get them motivated to read. Let's face it in this generation technology is key and having Kindle Fires with apps and ebooks that can be downloaded at any time makes it all worthwhile. No more waiting for books to be ordered, or kids waiting to read a particular book or having books torn, worn out or written on them. With Kindles the possibilities are endless.

I want my students to be engaged and excited about reading a book and develop a love for reading.

With your support and generous donations, you would be helping my students become better readers and making reading a book less painful and more fun.
