Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
This book will come alive when we visit Manzanar. For the third year in a row, I am taking students to the Manzanar National Historic Site. We also have a scheduled guest speaker from the Manzanar Committee who was actually interned at Manzanar. Help build active, caring, just citizens
We are in California, and last year, our school made a substantial rise on the state test, and our rise is due, in part, from active projects like our Manzanar trip.
Many students are economically disadvantaged, some having never been far from an urban setting. My students are passionate about justice and freedom. Our school is large, but it possesses a caring, active staff, motivated towards progress. I have two seventh grade honors classes, and one class of lower level readers who on their way up. Getting students passionate about learning fuels their progress. They have demonstrated a passion for justice in an earlier research papers about the Holocaust, and now they'll learn the beauty, value, and power of literature as we explore this classic account of Manzanar. It will drive their learning and fuel their passion.
My Project
This narrative I am requesting, Farewell to Manzanar, will vividly bring to life the experience of Manzanar Internees. It will, moreover, pave the way for our guest speaker. All of these forces combined, including our field trip, will paint a picture of the Manzanar experience that will appeal to numerous learning styles and live within the minds of these young students for years to come. Sharing loaner books with parents at home will build involvement and reinforce the value of education in general. Reading at home can also strengthen a collective literacy within the community. Preschoolers and parents alike can enjoy this book and partake in the learning process with my students.
Please help us.
The class set of 25 books in itself is great, sending the additional books home for the students to share with their family will reinforce the importance of this learning experience for all. This is more than an academic project, it is an investment in creating just and informed citizens. The issues are deep. They generate a productive dialog and deep thought, a sure recipe for success in middle school. Make a difference in tomorrow! Help us support a just future. Thank you!
