We are in California, and last year, our school made a substantial rise on the state test, and our rise is due, in part, from active projects like our Manzanar trip. Many students are economically disadvantaged, some having never been far from an urban setting. My students are passionate about justice and freedom. Our school is large, but it possesses a caring, active staff, motivated towards progress. I have two seventh grade honors classes, and one class of lower level readers who on their way up. Getting students passionate about learning fuels their progress. They have demonstrated a passion for justice in an earlier research papers about the Holocaust, and now they'll learn the beauty, value, and power of literature as we explore this classic account of Manzanar. It will drive their learning and fuel their passion.
