This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Understanding light, electricity and waves requires mastery of some very challenging concepts. These concepts are difficult to understand simply with diagrams and explanations. Hands-on experimentation and interpretation of results gathered in a lab setting can help my challenged students get the step ahead they need.

Our high school is in an urban location.

We are in a high poverty area with nearly 100% of our students requiring free or reduced cost lunch. Many of these students have never been out of the area. They come from families where members rarely attended high school let alone graduated college. These students are exceptionally bright and highly motivated to achieve. They spend many hours studying as well as being involved in extra-curricular activities. They are committed to their education.

My Project

After many years of funding cutbacks, we have been working at bare bones level with science equipment. This is especially true with Physics. Physics can be difficult to visualize, especially in the topics of electricity, light, and waves. These are very abstract ideas and difficult to explain in drawings and discussions. My students need two Electricity Kits, one Light and Optics kit, and one Introduction to Sound kit to be successful in Physics. My students will be able to perform experiments with this new equipment, allowing them to see the result over and over again. Repeating results will help make them more competent scientists and increase their success in physics. The activities they can perform with this equipment will give my students a better understanding of current, voltage, resistance, light, interference, sound production and movement.

Many of my Physics students may be the first in their family to go to college.

Many of these students have expressed a desire to go to medical school and other areas where chemistry will be vital to their education. An investment in this Physics equipment is an investment in their future.
