My students need 30 soprano recorders so they can take their musical knowledge from their bright little minds and apply it to their brilliant musical fingers.
Did you know that music helped Thomas Jefferson write the Declaration of Independence? When he could not figure out the right wording for a certain part, he would play his violin to help him. The music helped him get the words from his brain onto the paper.
I need your help in supporting our future!
Who knows? We might just have an influential leader in my school who needs to play a musical instrument in order to inspire him or her to put their words down on paper to save the world someday!
My hard working students are attending a high poverty building. Like so many communities in America right now, we have been besieged by cuts in funding to education. Our town is devastated by high unemployment as well. The crisis of our economic situation here has roped us into a vicious cycle of the lack of materials at school for our students.
Music is a core class that reaches across the curriculum and inspires self-esteem, critical thinking, and discipline. I want to be able to increase our students' brain growth by having all third graders in my building learn to play the recorder. This simple instrument will give them skills that they can use in the regular class room: confidence, critical thinking, and discipline in learning.
My Project
Tests conducted by scientists say that children who are exposed to music or those who play an instrument do better in school than those who don't. Music benefits a child's reading age, IQ, and development of certain parts of the brain.
Playing a recorder is an inexpensive instrument that allows my students an opportunity to actively participate in setting a goal to achieve playing songs with proficiency. The intensity of their concentration while playing and the smiles that they have when they have completed a song is a picture worth a thousand words!
Children of poverty need confidence that the goals they set can be achieved. They find a sense of team work in playing an instrument as a group. My students feel a pride that they have worked together and created something fun and enjoyable. Because many of my students have very stressful home lives, playing a recorder can relieve stress. Music is one of life's simple joys; it helps calm the mind.
By donating to the recorders for my third grade music class, you will be contributing to sculpting necessary life skills for the 21st Century workforce.
Students who have played an instrument learn respect and responsibility for the instrument, a skill that carries over to showing up and working hard at their future jobs. Students will also learn that the discipline of practice proves that hard work does really pay off. Students gain an appreciation for beauty and the arts as also.
