Take a Ride On the Alimentary Canal

My students need 10 biochemistry student model sets to make organic molecules, plus magnetic marbles to make ionic compound models.

My Students

Organic chemistry is a part of our chemistry standards. Students will build long organic molecules (macromolecules) that will pass through the alimentary canal, and show how they break down into smaller molecules at each stage of the process.

Sixty five percent (65%) African American, 35% Latino; 70% girls, 30% boys, this is the make up my students.

My school is a magnet science and medical school in an urban setting in California. To the community, this school is a safe haven because it provides students from low socioeconomic background a chance to go to a school that produces high achieving students.

My Project

The students will build macromolecules and break them down into monomers to simulate the alimentary canal process; a three dimensional and interactive simulation of the alimentary canal. This project will open the eyes of my students to the relationship between body processes and chemistry; and will encourage them to go into science and medicine related fields.

With these materials, we, the students and I, will build more macromolecule models.
