My Students

How do sharks sleep if they always have to be moving? Students ask thought-provoking questions like this throughout the day, and I am often at a loss to provide an answer. Wouldn't it be wonderful if they had the means to find an immediate response to their question right at their fingertips?

I am an intervention teacher at a public school in California.

I work with 20 second and third grade students who are struggling in reading, writing, and/or math. However, they never struggle to come up with perplexing questions regarding whatever topic we happen to be studying! I usually ask students to see if they can go home and find the information themselves by searching the Internet. Unfortunately, I am told more often than not, that they have no computer at home, the computer they do have is broken, or that they have no Internet access.

My Project

Since the young minds of my second and third grade students are anxious to absorb the answers to all of their questions, and I would like to be able to provide them with the tools to find the answers on their own. While our school does have a computer lab equipped with thirty desk top computers, the students’ access to the lab is limited. I would love to be able to teach daily lessons regarding not only Internet research, but also proper keyboarding techniques. These “mini” laptops would provide my students with a relatively inexpensive way to gain the knowledge they desire in an immediate, manner.

Many of my students do not have computers at home.

These students, in particular, will benefit greatly from the ability to learn the skills necessary to access the Internet in order to research information they will need throughout their many years of schooling.
