Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Seniors at our high school are required to submit a senior portfolio in order to graduate. These portfolios are a reflection of their four years, while also containing key documents for their future, such as letters of recommendation, resume, cover letters and bragsheets.

My students attend a small urban high school with approximately 1000 students.

This Los Angeles public school accepts applications and uses a lottery system to accept students. The students travel, mostly on city buses, to attend our school. Our population is 59% Hispanic and 56% are eligible for free/reduced price lunches. The senior portfolio process can cause a great deal of stress for our students, especially if they do not have the materials. By giving them the materials they need, they can begin to assemble the evidence and reflections from their four years of high school.

My Project

I am requesting the binders, page protectors and pencils so that the seniors, especially those who are impoverished, can focus on their portfolio contents, without burdening their parents. I have had many students in the past (I have graduated three senior homeroom classes), who are stopped in their tracks because they do not have the materials they need to be successful with their portfolios.

Donors Choose can help 35 students to complete this very stressful graduation requirement.

By having the materials they need, these students can begin to pull together a portfolio containing quality work from their high school career and tools for their future education or career. I have had many students who use their resume from their portfolio to impress their future employers. Although some students are apprehensive to begin the portfolio, each one of them is proud once it is completed.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
