If I Don't Make Mistakes, I'm Not Working On Hard Problems

My students need hand-held chalkboards, chalk and erasers to facilitate the need to make mistakes in order to learn. Easy to erase, easy to take a risk with your answer. Go for it!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students risk their lives in ways we can only imagine on a daily basis. Some have no food, water, or parents who really love them when they go home. They are cautious and tend to hold back when asked to take a risk by answering a question that they are unsure of.

My students are wonderfully culturally diverse.

I am very proud that I work at one of the most diverse high schools in the state of AR. The experiences I have had thus far, are timeless in their value and they reflect on the depth of beauty within these little souls. I will not say they are disadvantaged, but I will say that most of them have faced hardships that we as adults may never face. I am amazed at the drive they have to face each day. It takes time and patience to draw them up to experiment with creativity and take chances on their daily work. They have to be held to a very high standard and shown that I believe that with effort, risk, and trust in a few people, they can achieve small goals that will lead to big goals which will lead to them being the greatest leaders of our world yet. Faith in themselves is not a problem so much, as it is a faith in the world around them that they lack.

My Project

I am requesting individual chalkboards. During my class time, I like to ask the students questions to gauge their learning of the lesson. I have tried several methods to lessen the anxiety of speaking in front of the class and getting it wrong. I have found few methods that work and the individual chalkboards will be a huge boon in this area. I want to encourage them to take risks in guessing, but I don't want to embarrass them should they be wrong. This method of instruction will allow for me to praise individually and correct privately at the same time! I think this method of instruction will build their confidence in themselves. I think that will correlate to higher grades, higher test scores, higher self-esteem, and the sky's the limit from there!

This project is so very important because it will be an indefinitely giving gift.

There is no greater pleasure than helping a child. As the saying goes, "There is no medicine like hope, no incentive so great, and no tonic so powerful as expectation of something better tomorrow." This project gives a child something to look forward to when coming to class. A better tomorrow.
