My Students

Timing is everything in Speed Stacks, the exciting Physical Fitness game that combines speed, hand-eye coordination, and extreme focus...and my students love to engage in this challenging task.

I work with over 300 4th and 5th grade students every week.

Most of these children come from homes that are at or below the poverty line. The majority are immigrant or first generation English Language Learners and spend their days moving back and forth between school, where instruction is in English, and home, where directions are given in over a dozen languages combined. Knowing how to code shift and make quick changes is essential.

My Project

One of the most popular Physical Education tasks that my students enjoy is Speed Stacking. In this fast paced game, a dozen cups are stacked and unstacked in pyramid formations. The children race against the clock to see how fast they can move the cups in the prescribed pattern. It is an especially effective game for the classes that I need to service within the confines of their classrooms due to spacial shortages in our overcrowded building. While engaging in this task, the children are in constant motion, completely focused, and determined to achieve their personal best efforts. We have the Speed Stack cups, but need mats and official timers, so that we can practice and improve our times without having the cups slip all over the place and come crashing to the floor. We can also use a guide book to get some new ideas for integrating this activity into our weekly routines.

Speed Stacking is fun and challenging, but like any sport, it needs effective tools to support play, set goals, and monitor achievements.
