3, 2, 1.... Accelerated Reader Blast Off!!!!

My students need a variety of books that include fiction and non-fiction, which will ensure exposure to topics that include Social Studies and Science. These include sets of science readers, Junie B. Jones stories, and titles such as "How a Book Is Made" and "So You Want to Be President?"

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember the freedom reading brought to you when you were little? The Accelerated Reader Program has given my students the freedom to choose books that interests them. Even though we give them permission to go to all our grade level classrooms to borrow books, we are running out of books!

My students attend a charter school in an urban area in Southern California.

Most receive free lunch, and all are given breakfast on campus. More than half of my class stays after school in a program. My class is composed of English Language Learners for the most part. The boys and girls in my classroom are either Mexican-American, Latino, and/or African American. I have students that are biracial, bilingual, and have been exposed to more than one culture. Most of my students have been together since Pre-Kinder since our site houses more than one school and students have the ability to go from Pre-Kinder all the way to 12th grade.

My Project

My students are in dire need of books that are of high interest. They also need to read more non-fiction books and are fascinated by historical figures/facts and scientific exploration. Although we have themes that expose students the aforementioned topics, the books that we are requesting will serve more than one purpose in our classroom. Students will be able to meet their Accelerated Reader goals, have engaging books, and will be exposed to specific information that is sometimes mentioned, but not explored to its potential.

The books in this project will not only impact for the better the students from my class, but all 2nd graders at our site.

Since we share the books, you will be able to help 75 students obtain high interest books. Their reading levels will go up as will their knowledge!
