This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Goodbye Open Court... Hello California Treasures! Although we are excited to be exploring our brand new literacy program in the Los Angeles Unified School District, we have to start creating, collecting, and researching new materials and realia from scratch! In kindergarten we have 10 new units!

My kindergarteners attend one of the largest public schools in the Los Angeles Unified School District.

The majority of our students are learning English as their second language and have limited knowledge and or experience with the subject matter we are teaching. From Language Arts to Life Science, it is imperative my students need to not only have hands on experiences with the unfamiliar content, but they need to see realistic photographs in order to comprehend and retain the new information they are learning.

My Project

Through the eyes of a lens, we can capture real images related to the themes they are working to grasp! It is one thing to show them an illustration of sap oozing from a tree, than to capture the image of that tree sap oozing out gives them the background experience they need to not only comprehend the content but be able to also retain that information that image provides them. As we all know music inspires! I am a huge fan of teaching about different cultures through food and music. I usually end up spending a lot of money on CD's to acquire the music I need to teach Social Studies. This school year I have a student from Bangladesh in my class. His mother brought food for our whole class during an special Bengali holiday, we also enjoyed Bengali music while eating! If we had an Ipod, I could download various genres of music and learn about several different cultures!

I can only imagine the possibilities!

I can envision times where we are learning about the weather and we simply open our doors and be able to capture images of the wind blowing various objects around. We can go outside and capture images of our shadows over the coarse of the day and learn and document how they change. Also, every year my classroom performs in our school's Evening for the Arts event, so the Ipod will allow me download particular songs instead of having to purchase the whole CD!
