This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine a school which has 1 computer for every 50 students. We live within a social world where we must be internationally conscious in order to grow as agents of change. Learning mathematics is not an isolated action and we must provide opportunities for our 21st century learners.

The challenge facing my high school students is to break away from the cultural practices of individually learning mathematics.

This negative habit of mind has kept many of our students from being: collaborators, risk-takers, and open-minded. Therefore, access to equipment which will allow them to study mathematics content and perform projects on them is necessary. Many of our students come from low income families and will be the first in their family to go onto higher education. Unfortunately, Government funds are quickly depleting and the computers we do have are deteriorating.

My Project

Computers will allow students to create social media platforms which are academically focused. We currently use multiple forms of social media such as Face Book, School Loop, and Schoology to help keep a different line of communication open to the families of our students. Students will collaborate on schoolwork, build personal responsibility when it comes to keeping track of their academics, and be able to research the ever changing math and science breakthroughs which have changed the medical and technological fields. Finally, students will utilize various programs such as Geogebra and online graphing calculators to enhance their understanding of math concepts. A computer is a versatile tool for our students to grow in a dynamic way so that they could learn from multiple perspectives in order to make informed decisions which will ultimately influence their futures.

By supporting this project, you will be helping us acknowledge the students’ ability to navigate within a technological world where information is more easily accessible with the right tools.

You will also be helping to change the culture of teaching and learning within our urban school setting to better fit the needs of our growing population. Furthermore, you will be helping our students learn mathematics from different cultures in an international forum via the world-wide-web.
