Interactive Mathematics: Creating College-Ready Students

My students need a computer to create visual, interactive math lessons and individualized experiences.

My Students

Every student deserves the best educational experience possible. If I had a way to make math more visual and engaging, my students would be more successful in the classroom, on their EOIs, (if they don't pass they don't graduate), and in future educational endeavors.

My students represent the achievement gap within the achievement gap.

They firstly come from low-income families and attend a Title I school. Very few students have a computer at home, let alone Internet. Their technology skills are severely lacking, and this puts them significantly below their more affluent peers. In order for my students to be college-ready, they must have access to different computer operating systems and experience innovative technology through presentations and demonstrations. A computer would create a more succinct presentation of information, allowing more time in the classroom for direct learning. Secondly, many of my students have special needs. The special needs of my students do not excuse them from passing the same tests as their regular education peers. My students need as much time as possible devoted to learning. Our current classroom has minimal resources and very few students actually get to interact with technology.

My Project

This resource will enhance my students' educational experiences on a multitude of levels. It will also expose students to innovative technology - making them more college-ready. Geometry and Algebra lessons will become more interactive and the learning will be more comprehensive as I can use the computer to show students examples of multi-dimensional items instead of just trying to draw it on a white board. I hope to connect the computer with a projector to make interactive presentations that will enhance my introductions to new material every lesson. I also want my students to create their own presentations on the computer, as well as use it to engage with materials on higher levels. Students who predominately speak Spanish, or other languages, can also watch tutorials in their native language, ensuring maximum comprehension.

Please help support my students.

These children deserve to experience the best education possible. I find it incredibly disheartening that students who live 20 minutes away have these resources readily available to them while my students can go their entire high school career without knowing how to create a presentation or using interactive software. This severely puts my students behind, widening the achievement gap and demonstrating that education is NOT the great equalizer, as it should be.
