Monet in the School Garden

My students need art and garden supplies, like paper, paint, markers, tape, art books, and garden tools, for their art projects.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I want my students to experience seeing the beauty of the school garden and the world around them through the eyes of an artist. However, after planning my art projects based on the work of Claude Monet, I realized that I needed more supplies than either my school or I could provide.

Our school is located in a highly congested urban area where poverty and gangs are a fact of daily life.

It is a Title One school where all students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Most of my students speak Spanish as their primary language and work hard in the classroom learning the nuances of the English language. This year's group face many academic challenges but have been finding inspiration for reading and writing through our art projects. Art has been an integral part of our learning experience. With the current emphasis on test scores, my students do not have many opportunities to be creative in the context of their school days.

My Project

A recent field trip to a nearby wetlands preserve made a wonderfully positive impression on my class. Since the trip the children have been aflame with ideas. I have requested Monet posters, books, markers, paper, paint, and garden tools to help us continue to use nature and art as inspiration. With these resources, I plan to push their ambition to a higher level of learning and skill. I hope to continue to cultivate their interest in nature by allowing them time to observe the changes, both subtle and grand, in our school garden. I will begin my projects by showing them the beauty and majesty of Monet's garden paintings using posters, books and a DVD about Monet's life. I intend to teach them to capture the immediacy of the garden's texture, color, and form by first making dots of color using markers and colored pencils. We will later expand our experience with paint sketches and floral still life works.

Inspiring my students to be creative may open them up to the boundless possibilities of what a successful path in life can be.

When they make art they are the captains of their own ships. With the current pressures to succeed on standardized tests, my students deserve to have access to the kinds of creative projects that require them to think and feel for themselves.
