Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In any biology or physiology class it's essential to provide activities and lab experience using real materials whenever possible. Many of the supplies needed are perishable and have to be re-stocked year after year.

My physiology students are graduating seniors that come from mostly inner-city neighborhoods and have been brought up in low-income families.

They attend a magnet school, so most of them are very motivated and understand the value of education. Consequently, they take their work very seriously and tend to produce high-quality work. They can be very demanding of a teacher and as such I have to make sure that I also provide high-quality assignments.

My Project

Unless they take a biology or physiology class in college chances are that these students will never have the opportunity to dissect an animal. I thank that would be a pity because students have always been very inquisitive regarding dissections and they consistently rate the dissection as one o the best parts of the course. The urinalysis lab ties in very well with the unit on the urinary system and is also a great way for students to realize how urine testing can be used to diagnose disorders like diabetes or liver failure.

This project allows me to take a number of units and make them better; they add activities and hands-on experience for the students, making the content a bit more engaging and also allowing me to tie in previously seen topics (biomolecules) or wrap-up the entire course (fetal pig dissection).
