The Class That Reads Together, Achieves Together

My students need a listening center and bookstand to support their fluency, comprehension and overall confidence in reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Second language learners need an opportunity to listen to the language before attempting to make it their own. Pacing, accuracy and intonation are are all things they need modeled for them multiple times and ways before feeling confident enough to try it on their own or in front of their peers.

The students I serve are title 1 and attend a elementary school in the shadows of downtown Los Angeles.

The majority of them are English learners. They delight in learning new academic vocabulary. They look to literature as a way to learn about the world around them and to look deeper into themselves.

My Project

Students will be able to use the listening center to practice their decoding and reading comprehension skills. Since the majority of students are English learners they need to hear the text read to them multiple times before they feel secure enough to attempt it themselves. Currently I work with students in small groups and read to them as they match the words to the sounds and follow along. They also partner read so that they have a chance to practice one on one. With this listening center they will have much needed third opportunity to read the story along with a CD to practice independently. The book rack will be an attractive place for students to store and select new chapter books. Because of space we can not fit another bookcase in the classroom and we need more room to store all of the wonderful reading selections we have. (Some books are currently in boxes!) This spinning book rack offers us a compact way to make students feel like they are browsing for a new book in fun way!

Stories are one of the most meaningful ways we learn about the world and people around us.

They connect us to people and places far and near. With a listening center and a book rack, students will have ample opportunity to enjoy new ways literature can enrich their lives. They will feel more confident in their second language as a result of the support the listening center will provide. Reading will be new and exciting when they can access literature in more than one way.
