How Do You Get Teenage Boys To Read? Easy..Find Great Books!

My students need books they can devour and then come back and ask for more. These include the Hunger Games trilogy, 2 sets of the Full Bluford Series, Diary of a Wimpy Kid, and more.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My teenage boys often come with me to the library and look at the expanse of books and say they either "look boring" or "they are all girls books." Although I don't think books always fall in a specific genre, I do know that there are some books that often get the attention of the reluctant ones.

Most of my teenage boys would not consider themselves readers.

Few have found books to open a place of imagination and wonder. A great number of them are more well versed on the latest video games and television programming. Yet, in class, when we do independent reading, boys and girls are equally immersed. The secret, they have good books to choose from. While most students are not familiar with the authors, they know a good story when they hear it, which is why after "book talking" a few popular "boy" books, they are off and running.

My Project

It only takes one book to convince a reluctant readers or a non-reader that they can do it and that they will even like it. The book that will do that for each student is different, which is why the list of books included are also different. They are different genres, as well as reading levels. When my students say, "Ms., do you have another one like this?" after finishing a book, I know that they are ready to keep moving forward.

The best part of having easy access to books and having students share these books with other students is exactly that.

They share what they read and why they read. They also invite others to read. It is not only the students in my classes who ask for books. I have had students from other classes come by and ask about a book or wonder if they could borrow the book a friend just returned. I gladly pass it along, because I know books are meant to be in hands not bookshelves.
