Read To Me!

My students need listening centers and audio books to help them improve their reading.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Imagine trying to learn correct English, when most of the people around you either don't speak the language or speak their own version of English. Some of my students live at the poverty level and don't have ready access to books that will help give them the knowledge they'll need to succeed.

Many of my students are recent immigrants, newly arrived to this country and struggling to establish themselves.

My families are hopeful, optimistic, but many are not able to obtain a lot of materials that could help them learn. Most of them speak English at school, but then go home to speak a different language. They are able to communicate, but the English they speak is often not standard English. This puts them at a disadvantage in reading and writing.

My Project

I've found that listening to native speakers is the best way to correct errors in speaking English. Audio books are not very prevalent, but they are so engaging for my students. Rather than just listening to the teacher all day, audio books present another interesting way to improve students' reading skills. Students can read along while they hear actors narrating the books for them. Last year, my students who read audio books were able to increase their fluency, comprehension, reading expression and vocabulary. I only have one CD player currently, however, so this limits the impact this could have on my class. Having a few more listening centers and audio books would help make this resource available to more students. I feel certain that audio books are key to helping these immigrant students "catch up" and learn English like native speakers.

Students who learn strong English skills in elementary school will be able to go on and succeed in higher educational levels.

Too often, students who struggle with reading in primary grades are not able to "make the grade" as they get to secondary school. Audio books are a fun and engaging way to help learners of English improve their skills so they have the ability to compete. Strong reading skills will help them succeed in middle school, finish high school, and go on to college!
