A Picture is Worth a Thousand Words

My students need 3 digital cameras for their Service Learning Project, a project where, through hands-on work, students are educated about issues affecting their community.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students are confronted with social issues every day. The Service Learning Project is an effective way to empower students to change the world, starting with our own community. Students research an issue important to them and create visual assets telling the issues' story.

My students attend a diverse high school in one of the largest school districts in CA.

My students are part of a magnet school program, an academic program that offers students a curriculum more focused on digital art aiming to better prepare graduates for real world careers. An integral part of the district's magnet program is allowing students from around the district to participate in the program. Many students are bused into school each day, some even traveling more than an hour each way in order to receive this unique public education. Because of the student busing program, my student body is not just a reflection of the community surrounding the school, but represents our large metropolitan city. I have many students in the Title 1 program, who receive free or subsidized lunches due to their family's economic state. I have students of multiple ethnicities, sexualities and varying abilities, each bringing their distinct visual perspective to my curriculum.

My Project

With these digital cameras, students will be able to visually demonstrate issues important to them through allowing them to capture high-quality photos of their urban communities. Through the Service Learning Project, my students will learn how to transform these photos into interactive presentations, showcasing the issue and a suggested solution to our diverse academic community. Giving my students cameras empowers them with a tool to voice their unique artistic vision of the complex world around them. Armed with a curriculum that not only trains them with a technical skill set with advanced software like PhotoShop, Illustrator, InDesign and PowerPoint, I also integrate art history and theory into the course work, giving my students a well-rounded understanding of the fundamentals. Many of my students' families cannot give their children a camera that can capture high-quality photos. By using these cameras, they will have one of the best tools to express themselves.

Empowering my students with these cameras will give them an artistic voice to tell the stories of issues that are most important to them.

Arming my students with the ability to capture high-quality images and transform them from just photos to key pieces of an interactive presentation offers them with a real world skill set. Additionally, these cameras offer these teens a creative outlet to express themselves while simultaneously serving their community.
