My Students

My kindergarten students and I are proud to be a part of a brand new school in Illinois. We are a STEM school, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math magnet school. I want to fully immerse my students in all of the aspects of STEM by setting up a classroom aquarium for science.

The aquarium will show the students by example our local wetland/river ecosystem, and how important it is to our city and habitat.

55% of the students receive free or reduced lunch. I want to give them experiences that I know they probably would not ever experience, while also giving them the science tools they need to grow. When we went to our local nature museum, my students were completely engaged in the hands on wetland/river exhibit. It gave them a glimpse into how our rivers work with the animals and plants together. I also want them to understand through first hand experience how important preservation is of our rivers, and the impact that man can have on all aspects of it. Ultimately so they will know the cause and effect of different elements on our local waters.

My Project

I am requesting a river tank ecosystem, which will exhibit flowing water to oxygenate the requested aquatic animals and plants. By witnessing this daily, and being responsible for it, I hope that my kindergarten students will gain the knowledge of the vast ecosystem that we have here in Illinois, as well as the different species that call our rivers and wetlands home. I will be able to implement many different activities with this new aquarium. Students will be able to do a local species study, journaling about the fish's habit, applying this local ecosystem globally, researching through the books I have requested what life is like in a river for not only the animals, but also people. Students will also gain a sense of responsibility and leadership, as it will be their duty to maintain the tank and it's elements.

As a STEM school, it is my responsibility to make sure my students are fully engaged 100% of the time in our schools core subjects.

Science being one of them, I believe this a great way to teach my students. I believe that having this will let my students shine among the school and feel special because we have this as part of our class, as well as becoming future scientists! Donations will help to foster and grow the love of science forever!
