Reading in my classroom is not just about reading quietly, it is about being curious, sharing ideas, asking questions, and making connections to what we read. Scope gives my students engaging texts that make these skills feel natural and enjoyable.\r\n\r\nThrough the magazines, students practice important ELA skills such as identifying central ideas, finding evidence, analyzing characters and authors' choices, learning new vocabulary, and discussing their thinking with others. The variety of topics also gives students opportunities to explore and learn more information!\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite things is seeing students who do not always consider themselves \"readers\" become excited about a new issue. For instance, students are moving beyond summarizing plots and are instead learning to analyze complex character motivations and themes, a skill set they can apply to a variety of subjects. Discussions are vibrant, with students regularly engaging in text-to-text and text-to-world connections, which helps them see the relevance of literature in their everyday lives. This approach to teaching literature introduces critical thinking and empathy building, skills highly valued by both educators and the community.\r\n\r\nReading in the classroom now looks less like silent, individual work and more like a collaborative workshop. Small groups dissect passages, debate interpretations, and collaboratively construct arguments supported by evidence from the text. Technology is often integrated, allowing students to use online resources to research the historical contexts of the novels they are reading. This active and dynamic environment encourages students to take ownership of their learning and transforms the classroom into a hub of shared intellectual discovery.\r\n\r\nThe impact has been especially noticeable among several students. One previously reluctant reader is now an active participant, finding a relatable character in one of the new diverse texts and confidently leading group discussions. Another student, who had always excelled in math and science but struggled with the humanities, has found a new appreciation for literature, noting how the new books challenge them to think about problems in a different, more nuanced way. These texts have opened doors for students of all backgrounds and interests, proving the power of diverse and engaging literature to reach every learner.","fullyFundedDate":1632441509659,"projectUrl":"project/more-books/5853363/","projectTitle":"More Books!","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Storey","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7879614_orig.jpg?crop=1108,1108,x74,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1623254891969","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7879614"},{"teacherId":7130761,"projectId":9445811,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for funding our DonorsChoose project, Comfy Kids, Cozy Minds.
