Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Did you always love reading? In some point in our lives, we fell in love with reading. My students are struggling readers and they think reading is a tedious task. I want to change that with the Nooks. I want to enhance their reading experience.

My students come from high poverty backgrounds in California.

My students attend a school where the majority are Hispanic. Some of my students have not been exposed to many parts of the city. Many of my students haven't even heard what a Nook is and are not familiar with many things that the new age has to offer. My students enjoy good stories but often discouraged to read because they struggle with reading. My students are reading below their reading level. They should be reading at a 7th grade level but instead are reading at a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th level reading. I believe the Nook will help them spark their interest in reading.

My Project

These Nooks will bring a interesting component to my classroom. My students do silent reading every day as their warm up. Many of my students feel restless and unhappy about reading for a certain amount of time because they find the activity to be boring and long. The Nooks will interest kids that like technology and the Nooks provides a different reading experience. I know my students will argue over who gets to use the Nooks. I'm using these Nooks as incentive for students to read more books. A lot of my students have never seen a Nook. This experience will open their eyes and experience a feeling that privilege kids have. The Nooks might change their mind about reading and will make them read more. I will have the students use the Nooks every day during silent independent reading and have them take turn experiencing a new age of reading.

My students will be exposed to something they never seen before.

They will feel more savvy. Nooks will make an impact on reading in my classroom. It will encourage students to read and to love reading in a different form.
