Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Have music or books ever helped you get through emotionally challenging times? I know my students will love the Newbery Honor book "After Tupac and D Foster" because it doesn't shy away from the kind of challenges they face in their own lives, and centers around characters to whom they can relate!

We are a large inner-city middle school in a high-poverty California neighborhood.

My students (majority Latina/o with a significant African-American minority) have a lot to offer the world, but also sometimes have low motivation when it comes to academic matters. For some, basic physical and emotional needs are not being met outside of school, which makes it harder for them to truly invest themselves in school. However, these are the kind of kids who NEED books that absorb them, show them that they're not alone, and convince them that reading isn't just for nerds. As music is one of the most important, and most stable, things in many of their lives, I feel that the protagonists' love for the music of Tupac Shakur will be an ideal "hook" to get them interested in this book. Furthermore, the issues it contains, such as absent fathers, life as a foster child, and treatment by corrupt law enforcement, will resonate with many of them personally.

My Project

Although many of my students are reluctant readers, I have already seen that they become exponentially more interested when they read about characters who have the same interests and life experiences as they do. I am excited that there is finally a book out there which combines Newbery Honor quality with urban realism. I am requesting 40 copies of the book "After Tupac and D Foster." As we read it, we will do a variety of activities including reflection/discussion questions, "translations" of colloquialisms in the text into academic English, creative diary entries, analysis of common themes between this book and other works of literature, persuasive writing related to how society should address the tough issues in the story, and more...

As any good teacher knows, getting the students to self-motivate in the classroom is infinitely more effective AND satisfying than any other method of instruction.

I live for those moments where the kids cry out in protest when I say we're done reading for the day, and I can't wait to share this award-winning book with them!
