Garden of Pride: Teaching Rurally-Based Students to Garden

My students need supplies, like a composter, garden tools and seeds, to start a school garden. We hope to teach students in our rural community to grow vegetables, and in return, reduce food costs for their families.

My Students

C. Statius said "He plants trees to benefit another generation." We are hoping to do just this...just with vegetables. Help us teach students how to provide for themselves and learn to love vegetables!

The class that will be participating in this project is my first through fourth grade gifted class.

They are a group of highly-motivated students who, I feel, can really make a difference in our small community. Our school has a very high rate of students who are on free or reduced lunch. We came up with the idea for this garden in hopes of teaching students at our school just how easy it is to provide for yourself and eat healthy on a budget.

My Project

I have requested starter seeds, a composter, and garden tools for the students to use while creating their garden. With the resources that we have requested, we will be able to start a school garden that will hopefully spread into a community garden. Our dream is to teach students the ins and outs of gardening and provide free seeds to our community in the future.

So many children go hungry everyday, especially in the summer when they are no longer in school.

Our hopes are that we can inspire children and families to create their own gardens to help ease some of this hunger and also ease any financial burdens that they may be facing.
