From Desks to Lab Benches to the World of Science

My students need chemicals and tools, such as various kits for endothermic, exothermic, making synthetic rubber and properties of acids,to conduct chemical experiments and learn about atoms, the periodic table, and chemical reactions.

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Do you remember being in science classes and being riveted by all of the amazing demonstrations and hands on experiments? My students don’t know what it means to be in a real science lab and actually conduct their own experiments with scientific equipment.

My 133 8th graders are lively, eager and excited to study science, but because of limited supplies are so limited in their actual lab experience.

Most of my students are Title I eligible and many are grade levels behind. The school is in a low-income community and most students qualify for reduced lunches. The school has recently been reconstituted and has undergone a lot of changes. This has lead to much improvement in the community and safety. I teach 6 periods of students, half of which are Honors. Many of my students started the year off below or far below basic.

My Project

My students need chemicals and tools, such as various kits for endothermic, exothermic, making synthetic rubber and properties of acids,to conduct chemical experiments and learn about atoms, the periodic table, and chemical reactions. I am exited to see more and more excitement and effort in my students. They are grasping the material, but I find that the largest problem is that my students could not visualize the concepts. As we are starting chemistry, these supplies are exactly what my students need to bring the concepts to life. As we move into chemistry, we will be able to build models of atoms, see what the elements in the periodic table actually look like, observe chemical reactions, including endo and exothermic and acid and base reactions. The kits are self-contained examples of the exact concepts that my students are learning.

Even more so than my students just learning the content this year, my students are learning how to study science and how to be real scientists.

What all of this equipment allows for is for students to learn to conduct scientific inquiries, learn lab procedures, and actually experience the science. This equipment will help students be prepared for high school, college, and life after school. They will be ready to ask questions and learn about the world.
