The Art of Food

My students need modeling paste, gel medium, paste and cloud clay to create amazing sculptures of faux desserts.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students live in a large, urban and culturally diverse city in New Jersey. Our high school has 2300 students from Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and South and Central America, and the Caribbean. Many of them are first generation who come to this country with limited or no English.

My students have a wide variety of challenges they face in their home and school life.

Most of my students work after school to help support their families and pay for necessities of their high school such as graduation fees and prom. Some have to watch younger siblings while their parents work. I teach in the most diverse high school in New Jersey. I have students from India, Pakistan, Egypt, Philipines, Vietnam, China, Africa, Central and South America, as well as many of the Caribbean Islands. These students come to us, usually not speaking English, and very rarely ever having a background of art education from their country. Yet, they are rich in cultural heritage and traditions and I try to incorporate those traditions into my lesson to make their education in art, as short as it may be, relevant to their lives in the United States. Our high school is in a very urban area, and the students face being new to the country as well and navigating the challenges of city life.

My Project

Who doesn't have a guilty pleasure of watching Cake Boss, DC Cupcakes or Top Chef on television? My students are just as enthralled with these popular culture shows as we are. In my sculpture class, one of the assignments is to create a life like sculpture of a dessert item. These resources will help students make those sculptures a reality. The modeling paste has the consistency of frosting so students who create cakes, which is the most popular choice, will be able to utilize this material for realistic recreation of their dessert. The paste is for papier-mache to help reinforce the armature in the sculpture. The other items are tools and materials to assist the students in their sculpture creating.

This project is important to students for a variety of reasons.

First, a good portion of my students are enrolled in the Culinary Arts magnet program in my school. These students can make works of art based in their area of interest. Students can practice their creative skills without worrying about taste. Other students simply enjoy having a creative outlet and creative delicious looking "desserts". When the assignment is complete the students will host an exhibition of their finished work.
