This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

THEY WANT MORE CHAPTER BOOKS!!! My class this year loves to read chapter books. They are reading ravenously through my classroom library. The hue and cry every day is for different, longer, MORE chapter books.

My students live in a high poverty area and are lacking extras at home.

Most of them are English Language Learners. My classroom library is in dire need of more chapter books for my students to check out. As you can imagine, many of my books are careworn and falling apart. I tape and re-tape until it becomes a futile attempt at getting one more reading out of a book. I scour yard sales and thrift stores buying up all the extras I can afford so that my students will have books to take home and read. Our school needs as many chapter books as it can get so that our students will have access to literature. They need practice in all areas of reading and comprehension. Since many of their families cannot afford to buy books, it is up to the schools to provide them with good literature choices. With all the budget cuts we in Arizona have faced and continue to face, the more we need to utilize agencies like Donors Choose in order to supplement classroom resources.

My Project

Generous donors like you are the key to supplementing my classroom resources with essential literature. This literature will appeal to specific audiences in my classroom. The "Best" collections for boys and girls include titles that will excite and motivate each child. The "Kids of Polk Street School" are great stories that all school children will be able to relate to as they read. "Dear Deer" and "Eight Ate" will teach words that are difficult for English Language Learners to grasp.

These chapter books will give the students more choices and allow them to reach their sustained silent reading goals.

Reading for longer and longer periods of time boosts their reading confidence and teaches enjoyment of literature for entertainment. If we can instill this at a young age, reading for entertainment will become a lifelong source of pleasure. YOU can be the source of their reading for enjoyment education!
