My students need a listening center and a variety of French, Spanish, and German beginner books and magazines to read during free reads in which they will develop unique vocabularies of their own!

My Students

Do you remember what it was like trying to learn a language from your textbook? Were you overwhelmed with memorization versus internalization of the new language? Unfortunately, attrition rates in foreign language remains high and students generally lack great confidence with learning a new language

I have a group of 160 middle school students who are being introduced to the basics of German, Spanish, and French in a one semester course.

They are an energetic, excited group of learners who also love to read. For this reason, I have decided to pair using Asher's TPR "Total Physical Response" language acquisition techniques with free reading times and read alouds to allow students the opportunity to pick up a book (which they already love to do)...but in the foreign language they are learning in order for them to have some left-brain, literacy building opportunities to improve their confidence with the language through their own unique interests!

My Project

Having these books will allow my students to explore their interests in books/magazines while acquiring the foreign language. They will be experiencing a more natural, relaxed language learning environment and socializing with their peers through collaborative discussions/metacognitive talks afterward about the new vocabulary words they were able to learn on their own using good reading techniques (context clues, cognates...etc).

This project will have long-lasting impact for these rural/suburban students who are becoming aware of the importance of being culturally and linguistically diverse in our world today.Your donation would allow the WL program to grow in a way that might open more doors for language programs within the junior high.

Having these books will give students the chance to build their confidence in learning a new lang. & decrease the attrition rates that yield from the more traditional lang teaching methods
