My Students

Ceramics is a great way for students to learn that art is not just about drawing skills. Working with clay can offer problem solving skills that relate to math and science. The process can be very rewarding and offer self esteem for students that find difficulties expressing themselves verbally.

In 2011, the entire campus underwent a complete $105 million modernization just in time for our 75th anniversary. More than 9 out of 10 Wilson graduates attend college and members of last year's class were accepted to over 200 universities and junior colleges across 41 states and the District of Columbia and offered over $18 million in scholarships."(DCPS school profile)

My Project

Our school renovation gave us a beautiful studio with no tools. I have been creative in making and finding temporary tools for the students to use in class. However, these tools are never as strong as the art tools. While I want to inspire my students to be creative in finding resources I also want to have them use professional tools, so they feel the value in their art form.

Helping students see their creativity become a 3D object can lead them to see how mechanics, engineering, and inventions can be a reality.

This knowledge and confidence can lead students to discover the value in various subjects of curriculum.
