Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Many of my students come into my class with a shaky foundation in math. Mathematics is a subject in which each subsequent topic builds on the previous topics, so my students are at a disadvantage from the very beginning. However, that does not stop any of them from continuing to try!

My students attend a public high school in the middle of an urban environment.

They are all exceptionally bright, but many of them do not believe so because they lack confidence in their own abilities. Sometimes, even their families do not believe in them. Regardless of that, every single one of my students wants to graduate from high school. They are aware that the graduation rate at their school is low, but they are still determined to become part of that group. My students overcome so many different barriers in their lives. I am inspired by their determination and resilience, and I only hope that I can in turn inspire them as well.

My Project

An ELMO document camera will help my students in many different ways. It will allow me to project student work, using an existing projector, the so that the entire class can view his/her work. This will save precious time every day because I can project students' work instead of writing up the solutions to each practice problem. I can also use this to address common mistakes. This method will also motivate them to keep organized notes because they may be selected to show their work to the class. Using students' notebooks to do/show solutions rather than writing them myself on the board will validate their work, as well as emphasize the importance of showing all of their work. Since it is their work being shown, it will be easier for me to ask students to explain each step because they have already done the work, improving their literacy skills in a math classroom. My students will learn the importance of keeping neat, organized notes that will help them study for quizzes & exams.

Having an ELMO will teach my students to be accountable for all of their notes and work, as well as incorporate more literacy in a math classroom.

Using the ELMO, along with an already existing projector, to validate students' work will help build their confidence. An ELMO will help my students prepare for their lives after high school, where confidence, organization, and the ability to explain ones thought processes are among the most important keys to success.
