This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Artisan crafts are an important part of Mexican culture. Students love to create things with their hands. They love to make Mexican paper flowers. They display them on their lockers, put them in their hair and give them to favorite teachers. They are a great way to create a memory.

My students are wonderful freshmen in a high poverty high school.

They are inquisitive, caring and enthusiastic. As with many young people of today, they crave hands-on activities that appeal to their artistic side. Learning a language, like art, develops and uses the whole brain and inspires creativity. Whenever we learn about things such as paper flowers or other artisan crafts that are made in Mexico, students always say, "We should make those!" It would be wonderful to say, "We will!"

My Project

Extra projects such as paper flowers are very cost prohibitive to do in the classroom, yet offer a wonderful way to awaken the senses and imagination and creativity in the students. Art is a very important part of everyday culture for the Mexican people. The paper flowers create a memory and a connection for the students to the culture of the people who speak the language we are learning.

Paper flowers and other tissue paper decorations are a part of every holiday and celebration in Mexico.

Little extras such as making paper flowers help students to connect to the subject and to each other to make school and learning a welcoming and exciting environment.
