City Kids Study Ocean Animals

My students need a plankton net, jars, and a microscope to explore our ocean life.

My Students

Our ocean water is full of amazing plants and animals that are too small for our eyes to see. I want these inland kids to be able to see that the ocean is alive

My students live inland, and many have never seen the ocean.

Many come from families who cannot afford to take them to the coast. Most are sixth graders from public schools. They are always very excited to learn about ocean life, and remember this experience forever. When they see the ocean, they do not realize that it is full of microscopic plants and animals as well as the big animals that they see. I want them to really see what is in the water through the microscope.

My Project

We will be using the plankton net to sample the ocean waters on our field trip. Students will learn that seawater is full of plant and animal life, and that clean water is critical for the larval forms of ocean animals that we will find in our sample. They will learn that many of these plankton grow up to be the bigger animals that they will be touching in the tide pools. I want them to see why it is so important for us to keep the ocean clean so that these animals that are the base of the food chain will be able to survive.

Children from inland areas know very little about the ocean.

They must see that our ocean is full of life, and learn that we all are responsible for keeping them clean. They must connect with the life in the ocean to want to help preserve it in the future. We will also talk about how our own survival depends on ocean life which either eat plankton, or started life as plankton.
