Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The Last Lecture by Randy Pausch said, "The brick walls are there to stop the people who don't want it badly enough." Coming to America after the Vietnam War in 1975, I understand the challenges of school. I remind my students that there is no brick wall tall or thick enough that they can't break.

The students at our school are very determined and dedicated to their education.

Even though most of the students struggle financially, they continue to find a way to succeed in their work. For example, last year I had two students who created a project that took them four months to complete. The weekend before the competition, one of the girl's mom told me that her daughter was crying the night before because she was exhausted from working on her project. She completed her project and was a finalist at the LA County History Day California competition. The students have so much potential and I can see it when they walk into my classroom every day. I know this because they are in my classroom at 7AM studying and eating lunch with me every day.

My Project

Technology is one way to involve students in learning and bringing history alive to the classroom. The resources will give my students an opportunity to create a project of their choice (exhibit, documentary, or website) to compete in National History Day. The two students who made finalist last year with their project are very excited to compete again this year and I know the resources will help them create a project that they can be proud of. In the past, I have students who created a documentary about poaching, Anne Frank, Manzanaar, the My Lai Massacre during the Vietnam War, and the Killing Fields of Cambodia. There were students who created an exhibit of Edgar Allen Poe and the pacemaker. Both exhibits competed at the state level in Sacramento. The lives of these students have changed because of the project they researched and created in the classroom. One former student still talks about the Sacramento trip and how she enjoyed it, and was able to compete at the state level. The tablet, laptop and camera we are requested can only make our students' projects better.

"The choices you make dictate the lives you lead." by William Shakespeare.

In this case, the choices you make to help fund the Samsung Galaxy Tablet, the digital camera and the laptop we would use to research history will dictate the course of the lives of my students. I hope and wish that you will consider helping my students with your kind donation. There were many people who helped me when I first came to America after the Vietnam War and this is one of the major reason why I went into teaching. Students need to know how great this country is and I want to remind them that one person can make a difference.
