Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students have yet to read a book from cover to cover. Then, when they finally decide on a book (the really popular ones) the library catalog reads "checked-out." They try again at their local library only to find that the book has gone "missing." What now?

My students are struggling/emerging readers of English.

They need all the high interest books the can read in order to develop good reading and writing habits. However, they attend a California inner-city school classified as Title 1; our students face socio-economic disadvantages that put them at risk for underachievement and emotional distress. Their neighborhoods are plagued by a high crime, poverty, drugs, violence and low test scores. Their interest interest in reading may become obscured because of outside factors, so they need books that will keep them motivated and excited. Often time, the resources at our schools are scarce; this year, in addition to not having many titles, we are faced with not having the funding for a school librarian, limited their access to books.

My Project

This being said, they and their families have limited access to educational resources and model for success. Yet, a great number of our students have the resiliency and the great potential to excel in academia given they are granted an equitable opportunity to value education. The students' resiliency feeds off the books they read, where they find refuge to their struggles in life. These books are a collection of titles my students came up with in a survey about "Books That Changed My Mind About Reading." These books will be used to begin a reading campaign in my classes, to encourage students to write book reviews by students and for students, to recommend a good read. They will learn and share a great appreciation for literature; and become better readers along the way!

We are hoping to become the model for a potential school-wide campaign to encourage active reading, but more importantly active discussion and sharing about our good reads.

Funding this project will directly impact the reading, writing, listening and speaking skills of more than 70 students in my English Language arts course, alone! When we share our findings and our knowledge of these books through our student presentations and classroom book talks, we hope to impact many more students.
