My Students

Gone are the days of memorizing words for spelling tests. My students are learning spelling patterns which they can then use to spell unfamiliar words. Using picture books with larger print, and easier vocabulary, helps them to easily locate our weekly spelling patterns.

I teach in a small rural elementary school in far Southwest Virginia.

We have a large population of free and reduced lunch students in our school. Many of my students do not read outside of school. Many do not have books in the home. I have some struggling readers, which also translates into struggling spellers. These materials will help improve reading and spelling with these students.

My Project

My students need 12 picture books with easy vocabulary to use for finding spelling patterns in easy words. Rather than sending home long lists of words for my second graders to memorize and spell for me on Friday, I am approaching spelling a different way. I am teaching students the various spelling patterns and then having them explore the patterns in literature to see how they are used in writing. Students use picture books to do word hunts to find the various spelling patterns.

With the picture books I am requesting, my students will be able to "hunt" for spelling patterns and find the different ways they are used in good literature.

This will expose them to good books, as well as show them how spelling patterns are used in various ways using easier vocabulary. They can then transfer this new knowledge to harder, unfamiliar words.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
