Mrs. Kemsley's classroom raised $653

Listening Center for the Bear Den

My students need ten mp3 players so they can listen to stories during reader's workshop time.

My Students

The students in my classroom do not have working resources available for them to listen to stories. Many of them want to read more challenging stories during their independent reading time. However, some of their reading skills are not strong enough for them to read these stories independently.

At my school, the staff encourages all of our students to be life-long learners.

There are about 300 students at my school in Michigan. About 42% of the students in my school are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Around 35% of the students receive special services. In my first grade classroom, there are nineteen students. Everyday, I am committed to teach my students the skills and work habits necessary to attain their highest potential. Creating a safe, stimulating and productive learning environment is a very high priority for me. During our ninety-minute reader’s workshop time, after we are done with the large group lesson, my students work independently on their literacy skills in their reading folders. When they are finished, they have the choice to read silently or read to a buddy. My wish is for them to have a third choice, listening to audio books using the MP3 players. This will broaden their exposure to literature and help them with critical reading skills.

My Project

If I had the MP3 players for my classroom, it would open up a whole new reading world for my first graders. Having these available would help me provide the students with an even more stimulating and productive learning environment. They would be able to listen to, and would be exposed to, a larger range of literature with these MP3 players. In addition, some of my students are not read to at home. Research has shown listening to stories can help students build skills in fluency, comprehension, sight vocabulary and listening. Furthermore, it can help them learn the correct pronunciation of new or difficult words. Children’s reading and writing skills are vital in a world of learning. Having skills in reading and writing directly will lead to success across the curriculum. I truly believe, with the help of the MP3 players, my students’ literacy skills will flourish.

Research proves that literacy is a gateway to the world of learning.

Your generous donation to my request will undoubtedly make a difference in each one of my nineteen first graders. Not only will they enjoy the experience of listening to audio books using the MP3 players, but also their literacy skills will increase while doing so. Please know that your donation would make a positive impact on their education as well as their motivation in learning. As we know, with success comes happiness!
