At my school, the staff encourages all of our students to be life-long learners. There are about 300 students at my school in Michigan. About 42% of the students in my school are eligible for free and reduced lunch. Around 35% of the students receive special services. In my first grade classroom, there are nineteen students. Everyday, I am committed to teach my students the skills and work habits necessary to attain their highest potential. Creating a safe, stimulating and productive learning environment is a very high priority for me. During our ninety-minute reader’s workshop time, after we are done with the large group lesson, my students work independently on their literacy skills in their reading folders. When they are finished, they have the choice to read silently or read to a buddy. My wish is for them to have a third choice, listening to audio books using the MP3 players. This will broaden their exposure to literature and help them with critical reading skills.
