This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

What is the difference between an oral presentation and a filmed video performance? For my fifth graders, it is the difference between apathy and excitement.

My students are gifted fifth graders who have the ability to think and create at very high levels, but who are often frustrated by my school's lack of supplies.

Our school is in a high-poverty area, and it is often a challenge even to find colored construction paper to make posters. Clay, paint, and other consumable materials are practically non-existent. We are fortunate enough to have access to computers, but without a color printer and ink, the students have little reason to care about their digital products.

My Project

Enter the camcorder. This versatile tool will enable my students to tell stories and create oral reports in a creative way, without needing to constantly replace consumable materials. Seeing themselves "on TV" will motivate my underachieving students to do their best. The verbal and physical components of filmmaking will allow my students who are brilliant, but who have a hard time getting their ideas on paper, to shine and gain confidence that will last a lifetime. Additionally, learning to speak to a camera will enable shy students and students who are learning English as a second language to practice their speaking skills.

In short, your contribution will inspire creativity, enable underachievers to show their talents, and allow high-achievers to extend their thinking as they write, direct, act in, and complete post-production on short films and documentaries.
