Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

"Ms.H, what is South America like, or what about California?" My students are so intrigued by the world around them, yet most, have never been anywhere outside of Las Vegas. Regardless of this reality, they are determined to become informed citizens and are eager for knowledge!

My students are the sweetest, cutest, brightest kids any first year teacher can ask for!

I am so inspired by their desire to learn and as they would say, "get smarter, by working harder." They face one major challenge- their economic hardship. While they come from low-income households, they are going to make a strong impression on the world. The majority of them are English Language Learners struggling with reading comprehension. Most are reading below grade level. Regardless, this does not stop them from trying their hardest everyday. I could not be prouder of them!

My Project

TIME for kids would be of great benefit for my students. While most of these students struggle with reading comprehension, I KNOW that they will be super engaged and love these weekly subscriptions. As mentioned, most have never seen anything outside of Las Vegas, Nevada. Even though, they are limited by this temporary reality, they want to know the world through reading about it. They may not step foot in other countries, but they will use their imaginations and engage in discourse that prepares them for college and allows them to become global citizens. Furthermore, in regards to the figurative language activities, that was a special request directly from my students! I agreed... we need the resources to make word work in the classroom A LOT FUNNER. I also believe, that the fact that they are English Language Learners makes figurative language a lot harder to understand. They really need to work hard at this in order to be able to communicate eloquently.

By helping out our classroom, you are helping the future leaders of this country.

There is no doubt in my mind, that the things asked for will have a tremendous impact on their learning and futures. When I think about these kids, or when they talk to me about college, I know that I can impact their future in the most positive way possible by exposing them to global current events and having them expand their vocabulary. They want it, they need it, and most importantly- they deserve it
