My Students

Working in a small group can make all the difference.

I am currently teaching twenty one energetic curious second graders in a small suburban school in Northern California.

Every one of my students is a unique individual and deserves personalized attention each day. This year I am teaching math through small groups to better meet the needs of my students. Four days a week, parent volunteers and I meet with groups of five students to work on that week's math skill. Our only problem is that I have just one group table in my class. One small group must leave the room each day to work at a table outside of the classroom, while one group uses the rug and one group has to clear everything off six students' desks before pulling out their math supplies and getting to work.

My Project

A new group table would be such a joy! It would help with prepping my stations so our transition time would be shorter. When a parent volunteer is absent or unable to volunteer, another table would make it easier for me to monitor an independent group. I would no longer need to send one small group out of the classroom. If I had another small group table, I could use it throughout the day in all other academic areas as well.
