Creating a Portfolio to Prevent Drop-Out

My students need to have access to a computer so they can utilize the new career and college exploration program that was purchased by the school district.

My Students

Why set goals? Because if you aim for nowhere then that's where you will end up. It is my belief that by creating an on-line portfolio from the start of 9th grade, the students will make a direct correlation of high school with post-secondary opportunities; thus leading to a successful future.

My students are of a very diverse background in an urban community.

Their unique culture includes students of Asian, Latino, and African descent. We have a high English as a second language population. The current graduation rate is at approximately 55%. It is my personal goal to raise this to 100% by changing the belief and expectations of my students. The greatest strength that the students have is their appreciation and acceptance of cultures that are different from their own. They just lack the resources needed to compete locally and globally.

My Project

By providing my students with a computer which can be transported from room to room, they will be able to utilize an on-line career program. This program is a world of resources for the students. They can begin to build their portfolio with career assessments, interest surveys, goal setting, a resume, writing samples, college searches, and scholarship opportunities. The students will learn and expand on their literacy and research skills. They will learn how to set short term goals to reach their long term goals. They will greatly benefit from this because they will learn more about themselves and will build confidence so that they can graduate and be prepared to enter the world of work.

This donation will make a significant influence in the lives of my students because they will have an understanding of why they are in school and how it connects to their post secondary options.

They will learn goal setting and gain literacy and writing skills which will aide in their portfolios. By setting goals and improving their literacy, the graduation rate will improve.
