Engineering for Elementary Students

My students need 6 snap circuit kits to learn about electrical engineering in elementary school.

This project is fully funded

My Students

With the introduction of the 21st century learning skills and STEM, there has been a push to develop and innovate curriculum to be more technology oriented, hands on and problem based. We have science, math and tech time. However, elementary school doesn't have materials to teach engineering.

Our school is located about 30 miles west of Chicago.

Our community is a perfect blend of diverse backgrounds, with about just under half of our students coming from ethnically and religiously diverse families. Close to 20% of our students receive a free or reduced lunch and recently our school had lost its' Title 1 funding. Though our school faces changing demographics as well as economic challenges, we are working hard to ensure that we are inspiring kids to dream big. Our students are natural engineers. They love to build and collaborate, create and destroy. Our school district, along with the entire state of Illinois is pushing for more Science, Technology, Engineering and Math in the classrooms. However, our school doesn't have the resources to support our students in an engineering curriculum. The consequence of a lack of resources, could lead to students (especially minorities in the field) being turned off from the field of engineering.

My Project

By purchasing these snap circuits, our electricity curriculum would come alive. These sets can build over 300 different types of models and come with step-by-step instructions for each one! Teachers can use these sets to teach students how to read and follow directions while building a model, or to get students to use their 21st century minds by having them work in groups to build their own design for models. One example of a lesson could be the following: a teacher could put students into groups of four and ask them to design a circuit that is a burglar alarm for their favorite toy. They could begin by reviewing designs that are already provided by the directions. The students would work together to revise designs or create their own machine that fits the teacher's criteria. Afterward, they could reflect on their experience through a writing activity and improve their designs. In the end , they can present their design the class. The class could critique their ideas/designs.

The entire 2nd through 5th grade of our school would benefit from the snap circuit sets.

Our teachers will be able to show students how the toys they love to play with at home can be turned into amazing learning experiences. Best of all engineering could be incorporated into elementary school curriculum along side, math, science and technology. We would be able to deliver more effective STEM education while promoting the core values and skills of a 21st century learner.
